    Paleoanthropology Lab:
The Paleoanthropology Lab, under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Thompson, provides facilities that allow students to examine health, age, and pathologies of human dental and bone samples. Equipment includes a dental x-ray machine, Faxitron x-ray unit, 3-D digitizer, thin-sectioning station, digital calipers, and other osteometric instruments. This lab also includes an extensive collection of non-human primate and hominid skeletal and dental casts for comparative analysis.

The growth and development of immature individuals is a sensitive indicator of the quality of the social, economic, political, as well as ecological environment in which they were raised. The study of immature individuals from prehistoric contexts can provide information on levels of nutritional stress and disease affecting a population and therefore are a reflection of the ability of populations to adapt to a particular environment. Also of interest is the ability of the remains of children and adolescents to reveal patterns of behavior and provide insights into when the transition to adulthood took place. My interest is to study immature individuals in a comparative and recent prehistoric context to provide a broader picture of the “modern pattern” of growth and development and help deepen our understanding of what it meant to be a juvenile in prehistory. I welcome students who want to study similar and/or complementary areas of research.
