The Skeletal and Dental Biology Lab is under the direction of
Dr.
Debra Martin, a nationally recognized expert in this
field. In a recent research proposal, Dr. Martin intends to
analyze
human skeletal remains from three of the largest
archaeological sites in the Greater Southwest using a
biocultural model that integrates demography, pathology,
ancestry and migration with cultural and environmental
variables.
This is
based on archaeological data from Chaco Canyon (AD 900-1150)
and Aztec (AD 1150-1275) in New Mexico,
and Casas Grandes (AD 1250-1400) in Chihuahua, Mexico
that has yielded a voluminous literature on settlement
patterns, social hierarchies and power, material culture and
trade goods, subsistence, and population growth and decline.
Dr. Martin looks at patterns of disease and nutritional
deficiency related to cultural, demographic and environmental
factors.
