EXCAVATIONS AT THE HARRIS SITE, A LATE PITHOUSE PERIOD SITE
IN THE MIMBRES RIVER VALLEY, NEW MEXICO
June 1 – July 12,
2009
The Harris Site, located in the Mimbres Valley of southwestern
New Mexico, was initially excavated by Emil Haury and data from
the site was used to define the Mogollon as a separate
Southwestern culture. New investigations at the Harris Site will
be done to examine changes in household organization as Pithouse
groups became more sedentary and dependent on agriculture.
Students will learn basic excavation, mapping, and recording
skills while excavating several pit structures and associated
extramural features.
We will be staying at the Mimbres Cultural Heritage Center in an
historic abobe house owned and managed by the Silver City Museum.
Students will camp in the grounds surrounding the house. A camp
cook will provide all meals. Transportation to and from Las Vegas
to Silver City will be provided, but students are encouraged to
take their own vehicles for days off.
Students will
receive 6 hours of credit (Anth 488/688) for the field school. In
addition to the cost of tuition, a $750.00 room and board fee is
required.
